2009 in Nairobi was not a year to forget. Fifty beautiful life-size lions, decorated by artists and community groups, brought the streets alive, providing a talking (and walking) point and showcasing the city's rich artistic talent.
Nairobi's streets and shopping malls proved the perfect urban savannah for these painted wildlife ambassadors. The city and the art were enjoyed by people, particularly families, in their thousands – joining the safari with cameras and trail maps in hand.
We would like to thank all the artists who worked tirelessly throughout the project and all those organisations who had the vision to support it.
The sold out charity auction provided an exciting finale to Pride of Kenya!, raising KES 13 million for worthwhile lion conservation projects in Kenya.

Co-ordinated by international wildlife charity, The Born Free Foundation , in consultation with Wild in Art it is no coincidence the lion was chosen as the feature for this event. The Born Free Foundation and the lion are inextricably linked. Inspired by Elsa the lioness from the classic Kenyan movie “Born Free”, Virginia McKenna and the late Bill Travers, who also starred in the film, founded the Born Free Foundation. Today Born Free continues to champion the protection of wild animals around the world.
